Cool, damp and windy conditions did not deter a record number of athletes from competing in the 6th Carter Marshall - 2009 WinnerAnnual Holy Cross Neighbors Sharing with Neighbors 5K Run / Walk in support of The Sharing Place on Saturday 31 October 2009.  And Off They Go!At 0900 the racers crossed the starting line at 8115 Oaklandon and ran through the surrounding neighborhoods of The Highlands at Geist, Admirals Landing and Crystal Pointe before returning to the warmth of the new gymnasium at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where they had their choice of any of a large variety of pastries and lunch items courtesy of Au Bon Pain at Methodist Hospital.  Hot coffee was brewed by Pastor Dave McClean, who had also offered the invocation prior to the race.  Many of this year’s participants were new to the event, mentioning that they had learned of it through atGeist.com thanks to Tom Britt.  Tom was also responsible for connecting the event with Tod Esquivel of Indy Bootcamps who generously provided gift certificates from his faith based fitness programs.  100 T-shirts came from Philip Klinkose and Tim Williams at NCS graphics and a dozen winners’ medals came from Kellee Peek at Castleton Trophy and Gifts while Cheri Kirkpatrick created the finishers’ certificates.  Steadfast volunteers Gail Henricks, Lealon Tonkinson, Heath Kirkpatrick and Amber Brandes provided course marking, registration, timing and results tabulation.  Jim and Edna Boerger secured a commitment from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans to double the donation made to The Sharing Place, which provides food and clothing for our troubled neighbors at 7049 East 10th Street.  The fastest runner with a time of 19:15 was 16 year old Carter Even the Angels Participated!Marshall who was making his first appearance in this race.  Less than a minute later was the second place finisher, 15 year old Austin Potts, who has competed in all of these races since the series began in 2004 and always finished in the top six places.  Third place went to another first-timer, Michael Kepner, who, with a time of 20:25 was also the fastest finisher in the masters division.  Second and third places among the masters men went to more runners making their initial appearances in this race, James Benedict and Joel Sauer.  Leading the women was 14 year old Samantha Strong with a time of 22:48 followed by Amber Brandes in their debuts at this race.  Third place among the women went to Ashley Potts who, like her brother, has also raced every previous edition of this race without finishing slower than 7th place.  The fastest woman in the masters division was Ricki Kaiser in 28:59 for her first showing here.  The Potts family completed their domination of podium finishes when Janet Potts crossed the finishing line in second place of the women’s masters division.  Stacey Hart was rewarded for her first appearance in this race with third place among the women masters.  Complete results can be found at hclc.info.  Contact Eric Henricks at 445-4802 for information about participation in next year’s race as a racer or volunteer.
